A character card is usually a PNG image with the character stored inside. SillyTavern imports one from a file or straight from a link, then sends its permanent tokens with every message: with a 4,000-token card, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash still gives about 8,000 messages for $10.

Import a card

  • Open Character Management: Click the address card icon in the top bar.
  • From a file: Click Import Character from File and pick the card: PNG, JSON, CHARX, YAML and BYAF all work.
  • From a link: Click Import content from external URL (the cloud icon) and paste the link to the card on one of the sites listed.
  • Start chatting: Pick the character in the list; its first message opens the chat.

Make your own

  • Create New Character: In Character Management, click Create New Character (the person with a plus).
  • Write the basics: Give it a name, a Description of who they are and how they talk, and a First message that sets the scene.
  • Add depth if you need it: Advanced Definitions (the book icon) holds Personality summary, Scenario and Examples of dialogue.
  • Share it: Export and Download saves the card as a PNG or JSON file.

How many messages $10 buys as a card grows

SillyTavern shows a card's size as Tokens, with Permanent in brackets. Permanent tokens go with every message, next to the chat so far. Here the chat is 4,000 tokens and each reply 400, priced without caching. Going from a 1,000- to a 4,000-token card takes DeepSeek V4.1 Flash from about 11,700 to about 8,000 messages for $10.

If a card will not import

  • A link does nothing: SillyTavern reads links from the sites listed here and a few file hosts set in config.yaml. For anything else, download the card file and use Import Character from File.
  • A PNG will not import: The character data lives inside the original PNG. A copy converted or re-saved by another app can lose it; download the original card again.
  • Chats get expensive: Long cards and long chats both add tokens to every message. Trim the Description, or start a new chat to clear the history.
